Antonello Cannas, M.Sc., Ph.D., is Full Professor of Animal Nutrition in the Department of Agricultural Sciences (Dipartimento di Agraria), University of Sassari, Sardinia, Italy. He gained a bachelor degree in Agricultural Sciences in the University of Sassari, a Master of Science (Chair P.J. Van Soest) and a Ph.D. (Chair P.J. Van Soest, Co-Chair A.N. Pell) at Cornell University. He teaches the courses in Animal nutrition and feeding, and Feeding techniques and diet balancing for ruminants in the Department of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Sassari and is Director of the Ph.D. School of the same university. His main areas of research are: ruminant nutrition, with special focus on small ruminants; feed evaluation; energy and protein requirements of ruminants; rumen function and turnover; milk urea as nutritional indicator; nutrition and milk composition in small ruminants; feed palatability; environmental impact of animal production. Invited speaker in more than 20 national and international symposia. Former associate editor for Animal Nutrition of the journal Small Ruminant Research. Author of more than 160 scientific and technical publications, and book chapters. He also edited the book: Cannas A., Pulina G., Eds.. 2008. Dairy goats feeding and nutrition. CAB International, Wallingford, UK. Led the development of the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System for Sheep and its evolution into the Small Ruminant Nutrition System, jointly with D. G. Fox, Cornell University, USA and L.O. Tedeschi, Texas A & M University, USA.
